OFF2000: Windows Desktop Update Not Installed with IEAK Package Included in Transform (233250)

SYMPTOMS

If you install Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 along with Office, the Windows Desktop Update is not installed. This occurs even though you included a custom Microsoft Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) package in a transform that specified that the Windows Desktop Update should be installed.

CAUSE

The internal command line that Office Setup passes to Internet Explorer Setup does not include the switch that is necessary for the Desktop Update to be installed.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Use the Updated Transforms and Custom Installation Wizard

A special transform for CD1 (O9WIS_1.mst) and CD2 (O9WIS_2.mst) is available on the Microsoft Office 2000 Resource Kit Web site. Using these transforms files automatically installs the Windows Desktop Update with Internet Explorer 5. Also, you must customize these transforms by using the new Custom Installation Wizard (CIW) that is included in the Office Resource Kit core tool set.

NOTE: You do not have to use the IEAK to install the Windows Desktop Update with these updated transform files.

Method 2: Install Internet Explorer 5 Before You Install Office

You can perform a stand-alone installation of Internet Explorer 5 with a custom IEAK package, including the option to install the Windows Desktop Update, before you install Office.

Method 3: Repair Office Shortcuts After You Add the Windows Desktop Update

If you already installed Office, and the Windows Desktop Update is not installed, follow these steps to create Windows Installer shortcuts for Office programs:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. In Add/Remove Programs, double-click Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools.
  4. Click to select Restore the previous Windows configuration, and then click OK.
  5. Click OK in the Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools Setup dialog box.
  6. Click Yes to the prompt asking you to confirm the restoration of the previous version.
  7. Click Restart Windows when prompted.
  8. If you did not have Internet Explorer 4.01 with Service Pack 1 (SP1) or SP2 installed prior to installing Internet Explorer 5, install Internet Explorer 4.01 with SP1 or SP2 now. Click Yes in the Windows Desktop Update dialog box, and then skip to the "Run Office Setup to Fix Shortcuts" section.
  9. After Windows has restarted, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  10. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  11. Double-click Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0.
  12. Click to select Add the Windows Desktop Update component from the Web site, and then click OK.
After following the instructions on the Web site and restarting Windows, continue with the steps in the "Run Office Setup to Fix Shortcuts" section.

Run Office Setup to Fix Shortcuts

  1. On the Start menu, click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type

    path\setup.exe /fms data1.msi

    where path is the location of your Office source files.
  3. Click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

If you install Office on a computer with the Windows Desktop Update already installed, the following two features are available:
  • Installed on First Use is available as an installation state for the main Office programs. -and-

  • Windows Installer shortcuts are created on the Programs menu for the Office programs. These shortcuts provide resiliency and self-repair functionality for the Office programs.
