PPT98: Saving Presentation to Network Drive Can Take a Long Time (233244)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Macintosh Edition

This article was previously published under Q233244

SYMPTOMS

When you save a presentation from Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Macintosh Edition directly to a network drive, it may take many times longer than if you save the same file to your local drive.

This occurs if your presentation contains many separate objects or a lot of slides. For example, a slide with 40 drawn rectangles on it takes longer to save than a slide with one picture that is made up of 40 rectangles.

WORKAROUND

Method 1: Save the file locally

  1. Save the presentation to your local hard drive.
  2. Close the file in PowerPoint.
  3. Use Finder to copy or move the file to the network drive.

Method 2: Reduce the number of objects in your presentation

If your slide(s) contain diagrams that are made up of multiple drawn objects, you can convert them to a single picture. The slide can then be saved much faster:
  1. Select all the items that make up the diagram. You can do this by either pressing SHIFT and then clicking each item, or by drawing a box with your mouse pointer that encloses the entire diagram.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Cut.
  3. On the Edit menu, click Paste Special.
  4. On the list of available data types, click Picture, and then click OK.
  5. Repeat these steps for any other diagrams in your presentation.
