XFOR: LDAP Routing Property Schema and Binding for Virtual Server Instance (233212)

SUMMARY

For every virtual server instance on a computer running Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, there is a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) routing property that provides the specifics for the directory services that are being used, such as the server, schema, binding, and the naming context. By default, on an Exchange 2000 server, the binding is set to "Simple," and the schema is set to "Windows Directory for Exchange."

The settings for the binding and the schema are written to the directory for each instance of the virtual server. They can also be found in the metabase (by virtue of directory to metabase replication) at the following location:

smtpsvc/virtual_server_instance/RoutingSources

In the directory, the binding is referred to by the following key:

msExchSmtpLdapBindType

The schema is referred to by the following key:

msExchSmtpLdapSchemaType

However, in the metabase, the keys are referred to as BindType and SchemaType, respectively.

By default, the keys and their values are not recorded in the directory (and by extension, the metabase) unless you access the LDAP Routing Property page for the virtual server instance. Even though you make no changes on the property page, merely accessing this page causes the keys to be recorded in the directory and, therefore, in the metabase.

The default values for the schema are recorded in the directory and the metabase to be NT5Exchange, which is indicative of the "Windows Directory for Exchange" setting in Exchange System Manager.
