FIX: ICMP Redirect Packet May Prevent Installable Adapter Driver from Unloading (233000)

SYMPTOMS

In certain network configurations, when an installable [for example, Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA)] network card is removed, the driver may remain loaded. This prevents other PCMCIA drivers from being loaded, and a warm reset of the device is required before the PCMCIA slot is accessible.

CAUSE

A problem in the handling of Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) redirect messages causes this problem to occur.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem.

MORE INFORMATION

ICMP redirect messages are generated when there is more than one router on a subnet. Built-in adapters are not affected by this problem.
