BUG: Import Wizard Fails if Excel File is Open During Import/Export (231880)

SYMPTOMS
If you are using a Microsoft Excel file as either the source or destination when you try to import or export data using the DTS Import Wizard, do not open the Excel file while the Import Wizard is being executed. If you do it might result in the following error message:
Catastrophic failure
If you are running the DTS Wizard from within the SQL Server Enterprise Manager (SEM), SEM will be locked. If you are not running it under SEM, the DTS Wizard might either lock up, or report an Access Violation and quit.
WORKAROUND
Do not open the Excel file that is being used as a source or destination during the execution of a DTS Package.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
