XCON: Cannot Access POP3 Mailboxes on MCIS 2.0 Server (231649)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to access a mailbox on Microsoft Commercial Internet System (MCIS) 2.0 Mail using a POP3 client and Site Server Personalization and Membership security, you get the following error message:
There was a problem logging on to your mail server. Your password was rejected. Account: 'account name', Server: 'Server IP Address', Protocol: POP3, Server response: '-ERR could not open inbox for user', Port 110, Secure(SSL): No Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92.

CAUSE

MCIS 2.0 Mail may be having a problem accessing the Site Server LDAP Service.

RESOLUTION

Verify the following:
  1. That the Site Server LDAP service is the LDAP service installed. If the Microsoft LDAP service is installed, then run the Add\Remove option in the MCIS 2.0 Mail Setup, and remove the Microsoft LDAP sub-component. (Removing it is not necessary but the service is not needed if Site Server LDAP is being used).
  2. Open up Site Server MMC. Under Personalization and Membership, select your LDAP service located under your Membership instance. Right-click and select Properties. Verify that the port number is 389.
  3. Select your Membership instance. Right-click and select Properties. Verify that the port number is 389.
  4. Select your Membership Directory Manager. Right-click and select Properties. Verify that the port number is 389.
  5. Add the Internet Information Server (IIS) module.
  6. Within the IIS module, select the Default Pop3 Site. Right-click and select Properties. Select the LDAP Routing tab. Verify the Naming Context field does not include cn="recipients". It should only contain ou=members,o="organization name".
You should now be able to access mailboxes using POP3 clients.

NOTE: The port number does not matter as long as everything is configured to point to the same port number. If the LDAP server is running on a port other than 389, you need to enter server_name : port for the server name in the LDAP Routing tab of the POP3 and SMTP site properties.
