When you open a Web page that contains an Office Chart, Office PivotTable, or an Office Spreadsheet component, you experience one of the following problems:
- The following error message appears:
To use this Web page interactively, you must have Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 or later and the Microsoft Office Web Components. See the Microsoft Office Web Site for more information.

- The following error messge appears:
Problems with this Web page might prevent it from being displayed properly or functioning properly. In the future, you can display this message by double-clicking the warining icon displayed in the status bar.
-or-
- You see a blank placeholder where the Chart component, PivotTable list, or Spreadsheet component would be displayed on the Web page.
CAUSE
This problem will occur when the following conditions are true:
- The Web page that you are viewing is located on the Internet (as opposed to the Intranet).
-and-
- The Microsoft Office Web Components are not installed on your computer.
MORE INFORMATION
In an Intranet environment, the Office Web components can be installed automatically when you load a Web page and they are not installed on your computer. However, you cannot install the Office Web components over the Internet. The Office Web components were designed to be used in an Intranet environment.
