WD2000: Cannot Change Language of Paragraph Style to a Right-to-Left Language (231391)

SYMPTOMS

You are unable to change language settings for paragraph styles from non-English languages (such as Croatian, or German) to a right-to-left (bidirectional) language, such as Arabic, or Hebrew, without first resetting the language to English.

CAUSE

You cannot apply right-to-left language formatting tags to left-to-right text, or vice versa.

WORKAROUND

To modify the language for the paragraph style to a right-to-left language, do the following:
  1. Open your document in Word.
  2. On the Format menu, click Style.
  3. Select the name of the style that you need to change and click Modify.
  4. Click the Format button, and click Language. Then click English and click OK.
  5. Click the Format button, and click Language. Then click the right-to-left language you want and click OK.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
