XL2000: No Prompt to Replace Data When You Publish to an Existing Web Page (231154)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel 2000

This article was previously published under Q231154

SYMPTOMS

When you publish Microsoft Excel data to an existing Web page, Excel may replace the existing data or append data to the end of the Web page without prompting you.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you publish data to an existing Web page and the Items to publish setting in the Publish as Web Page dialog box is the default setting of Previously Published Items.

RESOLUTION

When you want to publish a worksheet to an existing Web page, you must change the Items to publish setting to Range of cells or Items on worksheet (where worksheet is the name of the worksheet). To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the File menu, click Save as Web Page.
  2. Under the Save options, click Republish, and then click Publish.
  3. In the Items to Publish list, click Range of cells or Items on worksheet (where worksheet is the name of the worksheet).
  4. If Items on worksheet is selected, click the appropriate item in the worksheet that you want published.
  5. Click Publish.
  6. When Excel prompts you, click either Replace file or Add to file as appropriate.

MORE INFORMATION

When you publish an item from a worksheet (a range of cells, a chart, a PivotTable, a list, and so on) Excel writes all the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) for that item between a set of DIV tags, and associates a unique identifier with these DIV tags. Internally in the workbook, Excel associates the unique identifier with the item that you published. The unique identifier allows you to republish that item in the future, and only replace that item inside the DIV tags.
