OL98: Delegate Using Send As Permission May Send Message as Self Rather Than Name in From Field (230705)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 98

This article was previously published under Q230705

SYMPTOMS

Microsoft Exchange will allow the Send As permission to be granted to a delegate so the delegate can send mail as their supervisor. A delegate using Outlook may set the From field to their supervisors name, but when the message is delivered, it may appear as coming from the delegate rather than the supervisor.

A typical scenario would be:
  1. Create 3 users and mailboxes (Boss, Delegate and UserA).
  2. Grant Delegate the Send As permission for the Boss's mailbox.
  3. Start Outlook as the Delegate.
  4. Add the From field to the current form.
  5. Compose a new message.
  6. Click From and choose Boss from the GAL.
  7. Click To to select UserA from the GAL.
  8. Delete Boss from the From field.
  9. Add the Boss to the From field. (note - name removed and added again). Send the message.
When the message is received, the sender will be the delegate rather than the name entered in the From field.

No errors or warnings are displayed.

CAUSE

A logic error prevented the checking of From field when the name was replaced. Later, when the message was sent, the From field (sender property) was left blank, so the delegate's name was used as the sender.
