User Name Keeps Changing in Dial-Up Networking Connection (230607)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 98
- Microsoft Windows 95
This article was previously published under Q230607 SYMPTOMS
When you double-click a Dial-Up Networking (DUN) connection on a computer that has User Profiles enabled, the User name dialog box may display the name of the last user who made a successful connection, even though you want a generic name to be displayed.
For example, you want everyone who uses a shared computer to make a connection to a host computer using the same connection credentials.
CAUSE
This behavior is by design. The user name and password are cached in the password file when a user logs on to a computer running Windows 95 or Windows 98.
RESOLUTION
To work around this behavior, follow these steps:
- Contact your systems administrator and request that he or she establish a generic user account on the host computer. After the generic user is created on the host computer, continue to the next step.
- Log on to the shared computer using the generic user name and password.
- Double-click My Computer, double-click Dial-Up Networking, and then double-click Make New Connection. Follow the instructions on your screen to complete the Make New Connection Wizard.
- Double-click the new connection you just created. The user name and password are cached after you connect successfully.
