To configure ICS to use a static IP address, follow these steps:

NOTE: Even though you can change the TCP/IP settings in ICS, Microsoft Product Support Services does not support customizing your TCP/IP settings. Microsoft Product Support Services does support the default configuration for ICS.

  1. On the ICS host computer, open the \Tools\Mtsutils\Ics folder on the Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM.
  2. Right-click the Dhcp_off.inf file, and then click Install.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. If the ICS host does not connect to the Internet when you start your computer, connect to the Internet. If the ICS host connects to the Internet when you start your computer, continue to the next step.
  5. Click Start, click Run, and then type winipcfg in the Open box, and then click OK.
  6. Click ICShare Adapter, click More Info, note the DNS server address, and then click OK.
  7. On the ICS client computers, click Start, point to Settings, click Control panel, and then double-click Network.
  8. Double-click the TCP/IP protocol bound to the network adapter.
  9. On the IP Address Tab, click Specify An IP Address, and then type a unique IP address for each client computer using the range between 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.253.
  10. In the Subnet Mask box, type 255.255.255.0.
  11. On the DNS Configuration tab, click Enable DNS, and then type the client computer's name in the Host box. Please note that the computer name is case-sensitive.
  12. Under DNS Server Search Order, type the DNS server addresses for the ICShare adapter that you noted in step 6, and then click Add.
  13. On the Gateway tab, type 192.168.0.1 in the New Gateway box, and then click Add.
  14. Click OK, and then restart your computer when you are prompted.
If you use another DHCP server and you want the ICS host to route Internet requests from the local area network (LAN) to the Internet, follow these steps:
  1. On the ICS host computer, open the \Tools\Mtsutils\Ics folder on the Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM.
  2. Right-click the Dhcp_off.inf file, and then click Install.
  3. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network.
  4. Double-click the TCP/IP protocol bound to the network adapter, and then type the IP address and the Subnet Mask address that you use for your LAN in their respective boxes.
  5. Restart your computer.
  6. If the ICS host does not connect to the Internet when you start your computer, connect to the Internet. If the ICS host connects to the Internet when you start your computer, continue to the next step.
  7. Click Start, click Run, type winipcfg in the Open box, and then click OK.
  8. Click ICShare Adapter, click More Info and note the DNS server address.
Note that the ICS host computer should be assigned a static IP address.

The DHCP server must distribute the Default Gateway (the IP address of the ICS host internal adapter) and the DNS server (DNS Server address of the ICShare adapter you noted earlier) to the clients or assign the addresses individually to each client.
