Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) forwarding is disabled by default in Windows 2000. This article describes how to enable TCP/IP forwarding on a Windows 2000-based computer. WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Enabling TCP/IP Forwarding

  1. Use Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe) to view the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters

  2. Set the following registry value:

    Value Name: IPEnableRouter
    Value type: REG_DWORD
    Value Data: 1

    NOTE: A value of 1 enables TCP/IP forwarding for all network connections installed and used by this computer.
