SYMPTOMS

When you close a Terminal Server client session window, the computer running Terminal Server interprets this as a broken connection instead of a disconnected session.

Although you are informed that your session will be disconnected when you close your Terminal Server client in this manner, if the Terminal Server has been configured to reset broken connections, your session is lost.

RESOLUTION

To avoid this situation, perform one of the following:
  • Disconnect sessions from the Terminal Server by clicking the Start menu, and then click Disconnect on the computer running Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition.
  • Click the Start menu, click Shutdown, and then click Disconnect on a Windows 2000 Server-based computer running Terminal Services.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition and Windows 2000.
