XIMS: Chat Service Ends Connection During Long Write (229674)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5

This article was previously published under Q229674

SYMPTOMS

When a Microsoft Exchange Chat Service computer attempts to write a large amount of data at one time, it may end the connection before all the data is written. This problem typically occurs when the output buffer becomes full and a large amount of data must be sent to the client.

CAUSE

If a connection to the server remains inactive for a long period of time, the server attempts to obtain a reply from the client. If the server does not receive a reply, it tries a second time. If the server still does not receive a reply, it ends the connection.

When the server receives data from the client, it restarts the above process and does not attempt to obtain a reply from the client until the connection has been inactive for a long period of time again. However, the server does not restart the process when it sends data to the client. If it writes a large amount of data at one time, it may end the connection before it has an opportunity to read any data.
