SUMMARY

This article describes how to remove the joystick drivers that were included in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 after you upgrade your computer to use Windows 2000. Windows NT 4.0 includes joystick drivers for the Microsoft SideWinder 3D Pro joystick and a generic analog joystick. When you install Windows 2000, the Windows NT 4.0 joystick drivers are not removed and are not used in Windows 2000.

Removing the Windows NT 4.0 Joystick Drivers

  1. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files Or Folders.
  2. In the Search for files or folders named box, type the following line, and then click Search Now:

    joystick.dll joystick.sys sidewndr.dll sidewndr.sys

  3. Delete any files in the list of found files, and then close the Help dialog box. For information about how to delete files and folders in Windows 2000, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type deleting files, overview, and then click Display.

    WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.


  4. Use Registry Editor to delete the following registry keys, if they exist

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_SIDEWNDR

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\JOYSTICK

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SIDEWNDR

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\MediaProperties\PrivateProperties\Joystick\OEM\Microsoft SideWinder 3D Pro

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\MediaResources\Joystick\JOYSTICK.DLL<nnnn>

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\MediaResources\Joystick\SIDEWNDR.DLL<nnnn>

    where <nnnn> is a four digit number.
