You receive an "A required .DLL file, MSO9.dll, was not found" error message when you start Windows (229507)

SYMPTOMS

When you start your computer, you may receive the following error message:
A required .DLL file, MSO9.dll, was not found.

CAUSE

You may receive this error if all of the following are true:
  • An Office 97 program was installed.

    -and-

  • An Office 2000 product was installed after the Office 97 program.

    -and-

  • The Office 2000 program was uninstalled.
The shortcut for FindFast is left behind in the StartUp folder after uninstalling the Office 2000 program.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, remove the Find Fast shortcut from the StartUp folder. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the Windows Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Taskbar & Start Menu.
  2. Click the Start Menu Programs tab.
  3. Click Remove.
  4. Double-click the StartUp folder.
  5. Click the FindFast shortcut, and then click Remove.
  6. Click Close, click OK, and then restart your computer.
