SYMPTOMS

When you run Setup for Microsoft Office, you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft Office 2000 setup needs to replace some Windows system components. This requires administrator rights. Please log in as an administrator to complete Microsoft Office 2000 setup.

CAUSE

This error message occurs when all of the following conditions are true:
  • You are using Microsoft Windows NT 4.0.

    -and-
  • You are logged in as a non-administrative user.

    -and-
  • You do not have Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 or later installed. (Windows NT 4.0 includes Internet Explorer 2.0.)

RESOLUTION

To prevent this error message from occurring when non-administrative users run Office setup, follow these steps:
  1. Log on as a member of the Administrators group.
  2. Install Internet Explorer 3.0 or later.
NOTE: If you want to install Internet Explorer 5 from the Office 2000 compact disc, double-click IE5Setup.exe in the \IE5\En folder on the root directory of the Office compact disc.

MORE INFORMATION

For a non-administrative user to run Office setup, an administrator must either advertise Office using the /j switch, or apply the AlwaysInstallElevated policy. After this is done, the non-administrative user can run Office setup, but they must use either the /q or /qb switch at the command prompt.

NOTE: If you run Setup with the /j switch or you apply the AlwaysInstallElevated policy, you cannot circumvent the issue with Internet Explorer mentioned above. You still have to log on as an administrator and install Internet Explorer 3.0, or later, before installing Office.
