SYMPTOMS

When you perform a Custom set up for Office and you set the Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 installation state to Windows Web Browsing Component Only, Internet Explorer 5 is installed anyway.

CAUSE

A minimal installation of Internet Explorer 5 will be installed if you do not have Internet Explorer version 3.0 or later, installed when you run Office Setup.

You also get this same behavior if you use NOIE=true on the command-line when you run Office setup.

MORE INFORMATION

If you encounter this scenario and you then uninstall Internet Explorer 5, you may see errors in the Office programs. For example, if you have only Internet Explorer 2.0 installed, when you query the Office Assistant, you will receive the following error when you click a topic:
Help requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 or greater. You can install the latest version of IE from www.Microsoft.com.
If you click Open on the File menu and then click Web Folders in the Open dialog box, you will get the following error:
Some of the files that meet the search criteria may be missing from the list. Not enough memory available to complete the operation. Close other programs to make more memory available, and then try again.
