SYMPTOMS

When you try to download or install Internet Explorer, you may receive the following error message:
The download location information is damaged. Please clear your Internet Explorer browser cache and retry setup.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if the Iesites.dat file for Internet Explorer 5 or 5.5 on the download server is damaged or if the Ie4sites.dat file for Internet Explorer 4.x on either the download server or your computer is damaged.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the appropriate method:

Internet Explorer 5 and 5.5

If you are trying to download Internet Explorer 5 or 5.5, contact the administrator of the download server that you are using to download Internet Explorer. If you are downloading Internet Explorer 5 or 5.5 from a Microsoft Web site, click the Write Us or Contact Us link on the download page.

Internet Explorer 4.x

If you are trying to download or install Internet Explorer 4.x, search for all instances of the Ie4sites.dat file on your computer, delete them, and then retry Setup. To search for files, click Start, point to Find, click Files or Folders, type the file name you want to find, and then click Find Now. If the problem persists, contact the administrator of the download server that you are using to download Internet Explorer 4.x. If you are downloading Internet Explorer 4.x from a Microsoft Web site, click the Write Us or Contact Us link on the download page.

MORE INFORMATION

Internet Explorer 5 downloads a new Iesites.dat each time you run Ie5setup.exe, so this issue no longer occurs due to a corrupt Iesites.dat on your computer.
