This article was previously published under Q229261

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade to Windows 98, you may be unable to use your CD-ROM drive even though it may be displayed in My Computer and Windows Explorer.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you have the "Device=C:\Windows\System\VCDREMAP.VXD" line exists in the [386Enh] section of the System.ini file. This entry may exist if you are running the Twins95 CD-ROM drive re-mapping freeware program. This program is not totally compatible with Windows 98.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, place a semi-colon character at the beginning of the "Device=C:\Windows\System\VCDREMAP.VXD" line in [386Enh] section of the System.ini file:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type sysedit and then click OK.
  2. On the Window menu, click System.ini.
  3. On the Search menu, click Find.
  4. In the Find box, type vcdremap.vxd, and then press ENTER.
  5. Place a semi-colon character (;) at the beginning of the line that refers to the Vcdremap.vxd file.
  6. On the File menu, click Save, and then click Exit on the File menu.
  7. Restart your computer.
