Problem with AT&T Winmodem in Windows 98 Second Edition (229211)

SYMPTOMS

After you install Windows 98 Second Edition, you may experience one of the following conditions:
  • You may receive the following error message:
    No Modem Found
  • The modem may be listed as an "unknown device" in Device Manager.
  • Modem Properties in Device Manager may not contain a modem tab.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you have an AT&T Winmodem in your computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, contact your hardware manufacturer to inquire about the availability of a fix for this issue, or obtain and install the most current drivers for your winmodem. For information about how to obtain and install the most current drivers for your winmodem, view the documentation included with the computer, or contact your hardware manufacturer.

To work around this issue, remove all references to the AT&T Winmodem in Device Manager, and then use the hardware manufacturer's disk to install the drivers:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, double-click System, and then click the Device Manager tab.
  2. Double-click the Other Devices branch to expand it, click the first reference to AT&T Winmodem, and then click Remove.
  3. Repeat step 2 for each additional AT&T Winmodem listed under the Other Devices branch until all AT&T Winmodem devices are removed, and then continue to step 4.
  4. Double-click the Modems branch to expand it. If there is an AT&T Winmodem listed, click the AT&T Winmodem device, click Remove, and then click OK. This device may not be listed in some cases.
  5. Click OK, and then install the AT&T Winmodem from your manufacturer's disk.

The AT&T Winmodem does not have a controller. Therefore, the modem device does not launch a Plug and Play event in Windows.
