This article was previously published under Q228339 SYMPTOMS
When Removable Storage Manager initiates a drive-cleaning operation on your system, it may take over 40 minutes to complete. This behavior has been observed when you use the ADIC VLS 4G tape library; however, other tape libraries may experience similar delays.
CAUSE
This behavior may occur because some changers do not provide Removable Storage Manager with a status of when the cleaning operation is complete. As a result, Removable Storage Manager sets a long timeout period to ensure that the cleaning operation has time to complete. When the timeout period expires, Removable Storage Manager removes the cleaning cartridge from the drive and completes the drive-cleaning process.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. MORE INFORMATION
When your computer performs a drive-cleaning operation, it seems that the cleaning operation finishes in a few seconds, the tape then ejects and remains protruding from the drive, but Removable Storage Manager does not respond and there is no activity. The Removable Storage Manager Work Queue still displays the cleaning operation as being in progress.
After an extended period of time, Removable Storage Manager removes the cleaning tape from the drive, returns it to its home slot and the operation completes successfully.
