Bus Mouse Does Not Function with /Fastdetect Switch in Boot.ini File (227991)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

This article was previously published under Q227991

SYMPTOMS

When you start a Windows 2000-based computer with a bus mouse attached, the mouse may not function properly.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Windows 2000 does not support the bus mouse. Therefore, the mouse is not detected or installed during Windows 2000 Setup. This applies to both "clean" and upgrade installations of Windows 2000.

RESOLUTION

If you upgraded the computer from Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, you can use the following workaround. This method does not work if you performed a clean installation of Windows 2000. Note that using this workaround increases the time to boot the computer:
  1. Use any text editor (such as Notepad) to open the Boot.ini file. Note that the Boot.ini file is a read-only file located in the root folder of the boot drive.
  2. Locate the line that contains the "/fastdetect" switch. Remove the switch command from the line.
  3. Save the Boot.ini file, and then quit the text editor.
  4. Restart the computer.
