Cannot Create a Dfs Link Under a Current Dfs Link (227772)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

This article was previously published under Q227772

SYMPTOMS

There is no option to create a new Microsoft distributed file system (Dfs) link for any current Dfs link in the Distributed File System snap-in. You cannot create links under current links; you can create only replicas.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

For example, the relevant part of a Dfs tree might be:
   DFS
   |
   |--Tools
   |--Flats
   |--Users A-M
   |--Users N-Z

In this example, "Users N-Z" might point to the \\Company\Users share.

There are no provisions in DFS Manager for creating Dfs links under any of the four current Dfs links shown above.
