When you install Windows 2000 and you dual-boot to Windows 3.1, you may have two copies of the Notepad tool on your computer. The Notepad.exe files are found in the following folders
where %SystemRoot% is the folder where you installed Windows.

This behavior is by design for compatibility with earlier versions of Windows. Windows 2000 is designed to provide dual-boot capabilities with Microsoft Windows 3.1 and share the same installation folder. The default location for the Notepad tool in Windows 3.1 is \%SystemRoot%\ and in Windows 2000 it is \%SystemRoot%\System32\.
