Compaq Presario Modem Does Not Work After Windows 2000 Upgrade (227469)

When you try to dial or configure a dial-up connection on a Compaq Presario computer after you upgrade from Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98 to Windows 2000 Professional, you may receive one or more of the following error messages:
Cannot open port, the port is already in use.
The object that shortcut name refers to has been removed or is inaccessible.
Device Manager displays your Compaq Presario 56K-DF modem with an exclamation point in a yellow circle. This modem may have the following status:
This device is disabled because the firmware of the device did not give it the required resources (Code 29.)
In addition, a "16550" device may appear under the Other Devices branch in Device Manager, with no resources assigned.
CAUSE
This issue can occur if your computer's BIOS does not accurately report the modem properties to Windows 2000.
RESOLUTION
Currently, the only resolution is to replace the modem with a modem that is supported in Windows 2000. Windows 2000 is not currently supported in Compaq Presario computers. Please contact Compaq for additional information.
