SYMPTOMS

When you click a link on a Web page that is supposed to navigate to a particular frame within a frame set, a new window may be opened instead.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the following conditions exist:
  • You have the Windows Desktop Update component installed.
  • The "Browse in a new process" option is enabled on the Advanced tab in Internet Options properties.
  • You have installed the update described in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

RESOLUTION

This problem was corrected in Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 2 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.

You can obtain these products from the following Microsoft Web site: To work around this behavior:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Internet Options.
  3. Click the Advanced tab.
  4. Click to clear the Browse in a new process check box.
  5. Click OK.
