  • Microsoft Windows 98

This article was previously published under Q226870

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to compress a drive using DriveSpace 3, you may receive the following error message:
Drive X: cannot be compressed because its root directory is too large. IDNUMBER: DRVSPACE748

CAUSE

This error message occurs because the root folder of the drive is capable of holding more than 512 entries. This can occur under any of the following conditions:
  • A third-party disk partitioning utility was used to partition the drive.
  • A utility was used to convert the drive to the FAT32 file system and then back to the FAT16 file system.
  • The drive was created from a drive image that had the drive properties set incorrectly.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

Use the third-party disk partitioning utility to set the partition with the following properties:
   Partition size: <2 GB
   File system: FAT16
   Root folder size: 512 entries

   Partition size Cluster size
   ------------------------------
   1 GB - 2 GB 32 KB
   512 MB - 1 GB 16 KB
   256 MB - 511 MB 8 KB
   32 MB - 255 MB 4 KB

For information about how to use your disk partitioning software, please consult the software's documentation or manufacturer.

Method 2

Remove and re-create the partition using the Fdisk utility.

Note that formatting alone does not correct the problem.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
