PPT2000: Error: "PowerPoint can't save files of this type to the specified location" When Exporting Slides (226781)

SYMPTOMS

You may receive the following error when you export slides from Microsoft PowerPoint.
PowerPoint can't save files of this type to the specified location.

CAUSE

This error is generated when you export slides to an Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) or File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server. The following file formats may generate the error:
  • PowerPoint Animation PPA
  • Portable Network Graphic PNG
  • JPEG File Interchange Format JPG
  • Graphics Interchange Format GIF
  • Windows Metafile WMF
  • Rich Text Format RTF
  • Tagged Image File Format TIF
PowerPoint does not support saving the previous file formats to an HTTP or FTP location.

WORKAROUND

To workaround this problem, save these file formats to the local hard drive, or to a network drive using the UNC naming convention. Then, copy them to an FTP or HTTP server using Web Folders in Windows Explorer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft PowerPoint 2000.
