PPT2000: Shapes and Pictures Do Not Appear on Slide Web Page When Viewed With IE4 (226715)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2000

This article was previously published under Q226715

SYMPTOMS

When you view a presentation that has been saved as a web page in Internet Explorer 4.x, you will not see any shapes, pictures, or other objects. Only the text is displayed.

CAUSE

This problem can be caused when the Rely on VML for displaying graphics in browsers option is selected in the Web Options dialog box. When you select to rely on Vector Markup Language (VML) for your display in a Web browser, this will make direct use of Vector Graphics Rendering (VGX) engine to draw shapes and display pictures faster and with more fidelity.

However, the version of VML with Office 2000 is not compatible with Internet Explorer 4.0, only with Internet Explorer 5.0 and later. When this option is used, the web slides will appear blank and only have text on them.

WORKAROUND

When you publish to the Web and you want to make the presentation as compatible as possible for as many Web browsers as possible, you will want to try the following steps:
  • Publish the web presentation in the All browsers listed above format.

For more information about how to optimize your presentation, click Microsoft PowerPoint Help on the Help menu, type How do I optimize my presentation for the web? in the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topics returned.

  • Ungroup vector images, and convert them to OfficeArt objects.

For more information about how to convert images to OfficeArt, click Microsoft PowerPoint Help on the Help menu, type How do I ungroup imported images? in the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topics returned.

  • Do not use the Rely on VML for displaying graphics in browsers option in the Web Options dialog box.

For more information about VML, click Microsoft PowerPoint Help on the Help menu, type What is VML? in the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topics returned.
