PPT2000: Error Message: PowerPoint Can't Save This File as an Add-In Because it Contains ActiveX Controls (226705)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2000

This article was previously published under Q226705

SYMPTOMS

When you save a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation as a PowerPoint add-in (PPA), you may receive the following error message:
PowerPoint can't save this file as an add-in because it contains ActiveX controls.
Even if you delete the ActiveX controls from the appropriate slides, you still receive this error message when you save in the PPA format.

CAUSE

If you delete the ActiveX controls, references to these controls remain in the PowerPoint slide.

RESOLUTION

To save in the PPA format, you must delete all ActiveX controls. You must also delete each slide that has contained an ActiveX control, and then re-create the slide. You can copy all of the other objects onto a new slide, and then delete the original. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the slide that contains the ActiveX control, delete the ActiveX control if you have not already done so.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Select All.
  3. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
  4. On the Edit menu, click Delete Slide.
  5. On the Insert menu, click New Slide.
  6. Click the blank Autolayout, and then click OK.
  7. On the Edit menu, click Paste.
  8. Repeat this process for any other slides that contain ActiveX controls.

STATUS

This behavior is by design, and will be considered for revision in a future version of the application.
