MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft collected hardware identification data in the past, but it has been determined that Microsoft no longer needs this data to serve customers' product support needs. The Microsoft Windows 98 Registration Wizard may have inadvertently sent a specific hardware identifier to Microsoft during user registration, regardless of whether you chose to send your hardware diagnostic information. Note that this hardware identifier is not used to keep any type of record about Microsoft customers. However, there are hypothetical scenarios in which this number could be used to learn something about your computer without your knowledge.

When you download and install the Registration Wizard Update, it updates the registry keys used by the Registration Wizard with non-unique values.
