256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SUMMARY

Using the checked version of the Cscui.dll file and a registry value, you can output Offline Files (known as Client Side Caching or CSC) debug statements to a notifications window. This information can then be saved to a log file.

MORE INFORMATION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To enable the Offline Files Notifications window:
  1. Place the checked version of the Cscui.dll file for the build you are running in the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder.
  2. Add the following value to the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\NetCache

    Value Name: SysTrayOutput
    Data Type: REG_DWORD
    Value: 3

  3. Reboot the computer.
When Windows starts, the Client Side Caching Notifications window appears, containing debug output. This output can be used to assist in the troubleshooting of Offline Files issues.

You can save the output from the notifications window to a file for later viewing. To do so, select the window and then press CTRL+S. Type a log file name, or accept the default name (CSCUISystrayLog). To clear the window, press DELETE.

The notifications window cannot be closed. To remove it, either remove the registry value you added in step 2 above, or restore the free build of the Cscui.dll file. Note that disabling Offline Files removes the notifications window, and re-enabling Offline Files re-enables the notifications window without requiring a reboot, assuming that the computer was booted with the checked version of the Cscui.dll file in place and the SysTrayOutput value set.

If the notifications windows does not appear, try adding the NetCacheDbg key containing the SysTrayOutput value.

Disabling Offline Files removes the window; re-enabling Offline Files re-enables the notifications window in real time (assuming that the computer was booted with the checked version of the Cscui.dll file in place and the SysTrayOutput value set).
