SYMPTOMS

During SQL Server 7.0 Setup in BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS), you are prompted to choose the character set that SQL Server uses for character-based data types. After you choose a character set, SQL Server does not start when it is initialized.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you choose a character set that is not installed on the server.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, rebuild the master database:
  1. Put SBS 4.5 CD-ROM 2 into the CD-ROM drive.
  2. In the SQL Server 7.0 installation folder (C:\Mssql7\Binn), run Rebuildm.exe.
  3. When the Rebuild Master dialog box appears, click Browse, and then click the x:\Sql70\X86\Data folder, where x is the CD-ROM drive.
  4. Click Settings to set the correct settings, and then click OK.
  5. Click Rebuild.
