Fax E-mail Confirmation May Not Work if You Reinstall Fax Client on a Multiple User Workstation (225374)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.0
- Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.0a
- Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.5
This article was previously published under Q225374 SYMPTOMS
When you use the Small Business Server (SBS) Setup Computer Wizard to reinstall the Fax client on a multiple user computer running Microsoft Windows NT Workstation, the fax e-mail confirmation program may not work.
CAUSE
When you use the Setup Computer Wizard to create a computer account for a user, it creates a set of client application configuration files and places them in a folder in the %SystemDrive%\SmallBusiness\Clients\Response folder. The new folder is named according to the client computer name that you chose during Setup. If the folder already exists, Setup continues. If the client program configuration files already exist, Setup overwrites them without preserving any modifications made to the existing set.
Each time a new user is allowed to access a workstation, this response folder is updated with their specific configuration information, including the Fax client configuration settings. The Fax client profile is generated from the Ntfax.txt file in this folder. When you reinstall the Fax client, the user's fax e-mail confirmation settings are set to whatever account exists in this file. The account specified is the most recently added user, which causes the fax e-mail confirmation to stop responding for all users except the most recently added user.
RESOLUTION
To work around this problem, manually change the user's e-mail address:
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Fax Client.
- Click the User Info tab.
- Type the user's name and mailbox in the fields provided.
- Click OK.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in BackOffice Small Business Server versions 4.0, 4.0a, and 4.5.
