SUMMARY

You can use the WINS administration tool to verify that a name record is in a WINS database on single or multiple WINS servers in Windows 2000. You can also create text files to save the entries for queries that you want to run more than once.

MORE INFORMATION

  1. Start the WINS Administration tool under the Administrative tools.
  2. Click a WINS server.
  3. Click Active Registrations.
  4. Right-click Active Registrations, and then click All Tasks.
  5. Click Check Registered Names.
  6. The Verify Name Records dialog box appears. This dialog box has two sections: Look for names specified by and In WINS servers specified by. These two sections are where you define your query. To search for a name record, you need to add the list of name entries you want to search for in the Look for names specified by box. These names must be entered in uppercase, along with an asterisk (*) and the sixteenth character.

Example of how to enter names in a query:
CARS*1B (This is for CARS domain 1B entry.)
740I*00 (The next three are for the computer 740I)
    740I*03 (00h Workstation, 03h Messenger, 20h File Server entries.)
    740I*20

Then, enter the IP address of the WINS server that you want to query in the In WINS servers specified by box. Note that you can enter multiple WINS servers here, and you can also click to select the Verify names with all partners of each server check box.
If you query the names listed above on WINS server 130.10.10.1, you receive the following output:

    Building server list...
The following WINS servers will be queried:
    130.10.10.1

Sending name query to 130.10.10.1 for name CARS[1Bh]: OK
Sending name query to 130.10.10.1 for name 740I[00h]: OK
Sending name query to 130.10.10.1 for name 740I[03h]: OK
Sending name query to 130.10.10.1 for name 740I[20h]: OK

    Results:

    CARS[1Bh] has a verified address of 130.10.10.1.
    740I[00h] has a verified address of 130.10.10.1.
    740I[03h] has a verified address of 130.10.10.1.
    740I[20h] has a verified address of 130.10.10.1.
    Finished.

This is an example of a query for a name not in the WINS database:

    Building server list...
The following WINS servers will be queried:
    130.10.10.1

Sending name query to 130.10.10.1 for name test[20h]: no response.
Sending name query to 130.10.10.1 for name test[20h]: no response.
Sending name query to 130.10.10.1 for name test[20h]: no response.

    Results:

    WINS server 130.10.10.1 never responded.
Could not verify the address for name test[20h].
    Finished.
