OL2000: Switching Between HTML and Plain Text When Sending E-mail from Other Office Programs (224851)

SYMPTOMS

When you choose to send e-mail from other Microsoft Office 2000 programs, there is no option to switch between HTML and Plain Text for the message.

RESOLUTION

Add a Windows Registry entry to add HTML and Plain Text buttons to the E-mail toolbar.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

You have the ability to send e-mail from within other Office programs, such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. To do so, click the E-mail button on the toolbar. This opens an e-mail header (envelope) containing an E-mail toolbar. This toolbar has no option to choose between sending the message in HTML or Plain Text format by default. However, you can add buttons for selecting the message format by adding and entry to the Windows Registry.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To Add the Registry Entry

  1. Click Start, and click Run.
  2. In Open, type regedit and click OK.
  3. Move to the following registry entry:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Office/9.0/Outlook

  4. In the key folder list on the left, click the Outlook key so that its folder icon appears open.
  5. Right-click the Outlook key, point to New on the shortcut menu, and click DWORD Value.
  6. For New Value #1, change the name to ExtendedEnvelopeUI, and press ENTER.
  7. Close the Registry Editor.
The above steps add buttons for HTML and Plain Text to the E-mail toolbar that appears when you are in Microsoft Word (not Outlook) and you either:
  • Click the E-mail icon on the Standard Toolbar or
  • Point to Send to on the File menu, and then click Mail Recipient
Note: The E-mail toolbar does not contain the HTML or Plain Text buttons when you create a new mail message from within Outlook.

The registry editing procedure above also adds an Item button for adding Outlook items as attachments.
