SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Word 2000, when you attempt to save a Word 97 for Windows document in the Word 6.0/95 format, you may receive the following error message, and the document is not saved:
There is not enough memory or disk space to convert this document.
However, you can save the document in the "Word Document (*.doc)" format without receiving the error message.
CAUSE
This problem may occur when the document contains many highly compressed images, such as PNG or JPEG images. During the conversion process, the Word 6.0/95 converter (Wrd6ex32.cnv) attempts to write uncompressed data for each picture.
For example, during the conversion process, an image that is 20 kilobytes (KB) may increase to 1 megabyte (MB). Therefore, if your document contains many of these images, the resulting file size may exceed 32 MB.
This problem is due to a file size limitation of Microsoft Word 6.0 for Windows and earlier, which the Word 6.0/95 converter (Wrd6ex32.cnv) adheres to. In earlier versions of Microsoft Word, the total file size limitation of 32 MB includes graphics. However, in Microsoft Word for Windows 95, version 7.0 and later, the total file size limitation of 32 MB does not include graphics.
