SUMMARY

This article describes how to insert the default horizontal line for a given theme after you apply it to your Web page.

For example, the Highway theme has a default horizontal line that is a dotted yellow line. Although you can recreate this horizontal line from scratch, you can quickly insert it by clicking the Horizontal Line button on the Borders toolbar. However, if you have inserted a horizontal line that is not the default horizontal line, clicking the Horizontal Line button inserts the last used horizontal line, and the default horizontal line is no longer available.

When you click the Horizontal Line button on the Borders toolbar, it inserts the last horizontal line you inserted or, if you have not inserted one yet, the default horizontal line used by the template.

NOTE: To apply a theme to your Word document, click Theme on the Format menu.

To apply the default horizontal line on your Web page after applying a theme, follow these steps:

Click where you want to insert the line.
On the Format menu, click Borders and Shading and then click Horizontal Line.

If you applied a horizontal line other than the default line associated with the theme, use one of the following methods to use the default horizontal line.

Method 1: Use a Copy and Paste Operation

If you previously added the default horizontal line to your page, copy and paste the horizontal line to the location where you want it.

Method 2: Reapply the Theme

NOTE: If you use this method, the theme replaces any horizontal lines you added to your page with the default horizontal line stored in the template.

To reapply the theme, click Theme on the Format menu. Select the theme and click OK.

Method 3: Apply the Theme to New Document and Use Copy-and-Paste Operation

Create a new document.
Apply the theme that has the horizontal line you want to use to the new document.
Insert the horizontal line on the page.
Select the line. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
Open or switch to the document in which you want to add the horizontal line.
Click where you want to place the horizontal line. On the Edit menu, click Paste.

Method 4: Apply the Theme to a New Document, Save the File, and Insert the Line as a Picture

Create a new document.
Apply the theme that has the horizontal line you want to use to the new document.
Insert the horizontal line on the page.
Save the file. To do this, click Save As Web Page on the File menu. Give the file a name and click Save.

The horizontal line is saved as a GIF image, with a file name similar to Imagexxx.gif, where xxx is a number (for example, image001.gif, image002.gif, and so on). It will be saved in a folder whose name corresponds to the file name. For example, if you saved the page as Test.htm, the page and graphics are saved in a folder called Test_files.

NOTE: If other images were added to your page when you applied the theme, these images are also saved using the same file-naming convention. You may have to view the images to determine the appropriate one.
Open or switch to the document in which you want to add the horizontal line.
Insert the image. On the Insert menu, point to Picture, and then click From File. Select the image you want and click Insert.
