WD2000: Illegal Operation Quitting Word After Changing Document with Custom Property Linked to Form Field (224647)

SYMPTOMS

When you make changes to a Word document that contains a custom property linked to a form field and then quit Word, the following error message may appear:

Windows 98

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
When you click Details, the following error message appears:
WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in module WINWORD.EXE at 015f:<address>.

Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 4)

WINWORD.EXE

Exception: access violation (0x0000005)
NOTE: This problem does not occur on Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 3).

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, turn off background saves using the following steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. On the Save tab, click to clear the Allow background saves check box.
  3. Click OK.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
