This article was previously published under Q224623 SYMPTOMS
When you print to an envelope, Word may not print in the correct orientation, print entirely on the envelope, or print on the correct side of the envelope. Also, it may print the envelope upside down (180-degree rotation).
This problem is most likely to occur with ink-jet printers such as the Hewlett-Packard DeskJet, the Epson Stylus, or the Canon BubbleJet.
These problems may be experienced when you use the envelope feature (on the Tools menu, click Envelopes and Labels), or when you use the Envelope Wizard (on the File menu, click New; on the Letters & Faxes tab, click Envelope Wizard).
CAUSE
The Feed Method in Microsoft Word is incorrectly set for your printer.
WORKAROUND
To change the Feed Method, follow these steps:
- On the Tools menu, click Envelopes and Labels.
- On the Envelopes tab, click Options.
- On the Printing Options tab, change the Feed method to the correct orientation and position, based on the information included with your printer, and then click OK.

NOTE: Most printers pictorially indicate how an envelope is to be inserted on the printer. Word should be set to match this pictorial illustration. If your printer does not pictorially indicate how to insert an envelope, refer to the user's manual included with your printer.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
The change you make by using the workaround listed in this article is a permanent change and remains until you change the Feed Method to a different setting. However, if you find that this setting does not remain on your system, the Windows Registry may be damaged. To correct this problem, remove the printer key associated with Word, and then reset the Feed Method in Word.
To remove the printer key, follow these steps:
- Quit Microsoft Word and all other programs.
- Click Start and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type regedit and then click OK.
- Locate the following registry key by double-clicking the appropriate folders:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Word - In the Word key, click to select the subkey for your installed printer.
- On the Edit menu, click Delete.
- On the Registry menu, click Exit.
