Fonts and Text Appear Blurry or Blocky in Windows Explorer (224507)

SYMPTOMS

When you use Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer, fonts and text may appear blurred or "blocky", and this issue may be more noticeable with larger fonts.

NOTE: You may notice this issue in other Windows-based programs.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you are using an ATI Rage Pro, RageII, RageII+, or All In Wonder video adapter with the ATI driver version 5.21 or 5.24.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, contact ATI to inquire about the availability of a fix for this issue.

To work around this issue, disable the font smoothing feature:

Windows 98

To disable the font smoothing feature in your Windows 98-based computer:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Display.
  2. Click the Effects tab, click to clear the Smooth edges of screen fonts check box, and then click OK.

Windows 95

To disable the font smoothing feature in your Windows 95-based computer:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Display.
  2. Click the Plus! tab, click to clear the Smooth edges of screen fonts check box, and then click OK.
