WINS MMC Displays Incorrect IP Address on a Multi-Homed Server (224449)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
This article was previously published under Q224449 SYMPTOMS
The Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS) Microsoft Management Console (MMC) displays an IP address in brackets after the server name (for example: WINSSRV1 [192.168.0.1]). On a multi-homed server, the displayed IP address may seem to be incorrect, particularly if it is obtained from a Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP) server.
CAUSE
The WINS service binds to the first IP address that is connected to NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NetBT). The IP address that is chosen does not depend on the binding order, but on the order in which Plug and Play starts the network adapters. Therefore, the WINS server binds to the adapter that is the first one to start. The WINS MMC snap-in displays this IP address.
STATUS
This behavior is by design.
