The information in this article applies to:
This article was previously published under Q224341 Moderate: Requires basic macro, coding, and interoperability
skills.
This article applies only to a Microsoft Access database (.mdb).
ERROR MESSAGE In Microsoft Access 2000, when you try to convert a
security-enhanced Access database that was created in an earlier version of
Access, you may receive the following error message: Microsoft Access can't open or convert this previous version database.
The database was created in an earlier version of
Access. You don't have appropriate security permissions to open or convert
databases created in earlier versions. CAUSE The current user account doesn't have permission to convert
or enable this database. To convert or enable a database, the following
conditions must have been met:
- You must join the workgroup that defines the user accounts
used to access the database.
- Your user account must have Open/Run and Open Exclusive
permissions for the database object.
- Your user account must have Modify Design or Administer
permissions for all the tables, including system tables, in the database, or it
must be the owner of all tables in the database.
- Your user account must have Read Design permission for all
objects in the database.
- Request that other users close the database.
THINGS TO TRY To resolve this problem, try one of the following:
- If you are a member of the Admins group, change the
permissions on the system tables to include Administer.
-or- - Have the database owner convert the file.
-or-
- Import the objects from the security-enhanced database into
a new database. This method is the least desirable because it will remove the
existing security settings from the file.
For more information about changing permissions, how to
determine the owner of a database, or how to import objects from a
security-enhanced database into a new database, please see the following
