All messages that were sent with digital security may be empty and contain an unreadable attachment when you revert from Outlook 2000 back to Outlook 98 (223965)

SYMPTOMS

When reverting to Outlook 98 after installing Outlook 2000, all messages that were sent with digital security may be empty and contain an unreadable attachment. Additonally, the icons have also changed and if you attempt to send a message with digital security you get the following error message:
The CSP Signature does not match the CSP installed. You need to update your security system, contact your administrator.

CAUSE

Security settings are not preserved when you remove Outlook 2000 and revert to Outlook 98.

RESOLUTION

Run Outlook 98 Setup and select Reinstall all components.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

The preferred method for reverting to Outlook 98 from Outlook 2000 when digital security is installed, is to export the security settings from Outlook 2000 and then import the security settings into Outlook 98.

To Export Security Settings

To export the security information from Outlook 2000, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. On the Security tab, click Change Settings. Note the Secure Message format entry. This setting will likely be either S/MIME or Exchange Server Security. Click OK.
  3. On the Security tab, click Import/Export Digital ID.
  4. Click to select Export your Exchange or S/MIME Security information.
  5. Type a file name for your settings file, noting the path where the file is saved.
  6. Type a password and then click OK, and OK, to close.
Your security settings are now exported to a file on your computer.

To Import Security Settings

After you have run the setup program for Outlook 98, use the following steps to import your security information:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. On the Security tab, click Import/Export Digital ID.
  3. Click to select Import existing Exchange or S/MIME security information.
  4. Click Browse to locate the exported security file. Click to select it, and then click Open.
  5. Type the password you entered in step 6 of the previous section.
  6. Type the Key Set you noted from step 2 of the previous section.
  7. Click OK.
The security information is now imported into your computer settings.
