Outlook does not exit after sending from Word (223952)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Office Outlook 2003
- Microsoft Outlook 2002
- Microsoft Outlook 2000
This article was previously published under Q223952 Note The procedures in this article only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate or Workgroup option. With this option, you can use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, click About Microsoft Outlook, on the Help menu. If you have the Corporate or Workgroup installation, you see "Corporate or Workgroup".
SYMPTOMS
If you use Microsoft Word to send an e-mail message, and later attempt to quit Outlook, Outlook continues running. You must press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to open the Windows Task Manager and force Outlook to quit.
CAUSE
When Outlook is running and you send a document using Word, Word uses a cache to improve performance. This cache prevents Outlook from unloading from memory while Word is running.
RESOLUTION
There are two methods to resolve this problem:
- Quit Word before you quit Outlook.
- Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to open Windows Task Manager, click Outlook.exe, and then click End Task. You must repeat this procedure with Mapisp32.exe for some earlier versions of Outlook, such as Microsoft Outlook 2000.
MORE INFORMATION
Other Microsoft Office programs do not exhibit this behavior if you start Outlook first and then send a message, since they do not cache the information.
If Outlook is not running when you attempt to send Office E-mail from any Office program, the program will hold a connection to Outlook until you quit the Office program.
