OL2000: .GIF and .JPG Image Files Do Not Display the Image in the Message Body (223593)

SYMPTOMS

When you copy a .gif or a .jpg image from Microsoft Internet Explorer to a Microsoft Outlook 2000 Rich Text formatted message, the image is added to the message as an attachment rather than being displayed in the body of the message.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Microsoft Outlook Rich Text format does not support embedded images of this type.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, use Microsoft Word as your e-mail editor. To do this:
  1. Start Outlook.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Mail Format tab.
  3. On the Mail Format tab, click Use Microsoft Word to edit e-mail messages, and then click OK.
  4. Open a new message, and paste the image.

WORKAROUND

If you do not want to use Word as the default e-mail editor, but still want the image file to display in the message body of the message, Outlook Rich Text format supports bitmap files (.bmp).

You can also use Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) messages to work around this behavior. The HTML e-mail format displays the images without the assistance of Word.
