AppleShare 3.7x Clients Do Not Support Third-Party Authentication Such as the Microsoft UAM (223159)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

This article was previously published under Q223159

SYMPTOMS

When a Macintosh client using AppleShare 3.7x attempts to log on to a Windows 2000 server using the Microsoft User Authentication Module (UAM), they may receive no response.

CAUSE

The AppleShare 3.7x client does not support third-party UAM authentication. The new UAM API was not implemented by Apple Computer, Inc. until AppleShare Client 3.8.

RESOLUTION

Upgrade the client to AppleShare 3.8 or later.

MORE INFORMATION

Apple clients wanting to use the Microsoft UAM included with Windows 2000 should for security reason upgrade to AppleShare 3.8 or later. AppleShare 3.8 also uses Apple File Protocol over Internet Protocol (AFP/IP). AppleShare 3.6 supports only AppleTalk. Windows 2000 includes a new tool to install the correct Microsoft UAM for the AppleShare 3.x version for the client.

To install the new Microsoft UAM:
  1. On the Macintosh client, click Chooser on the the Apple menu.
  2. Click the AppleShare icon and the AppleTalk zone in which the server is located.
  3. Double-click the file server.
  4. Log on with a valid guest, user, or administrator account, and then click OK.
  5. Click the Microsoft UAM volume, and then click OK.
  6. Double-click the Microsoft UAM Installer icon, and then click Continue.
  7. After you are notified that the UAM has been installed, click OK.
  8. You are now updated to the latest Microsoft UAM. Disconnect from all network drives and reconnect.
If this procedure does not work, you can follow the steps below and copy the correct volume to the local Macintosh computer. You must first locate and determine which version of AppleShare you are currently using.
To determine which version of AppleShare you are using:
  1. On the Macintosh client, click Find on the File menu.
  2. Type appleshare, and then click Find.
  3. When AppleShare is located, click the file.
  4. On the File menu, click Get Information. The version is listed in the dialog box.
Contact Apple Computer or your local Apple retailer for an updated version of the operating system if you have AppleShare 3.7.

NOTE: AppleShare 3.7 is not a supported configuration for IP or AppleTalk. AppleTalk may work, but is not recommended or supported because of incompatibilities.

Steps to manually copy the Microsoft UAM:
  1. Follow steps 1-5 in the instructions to install the new Microsoft UAM above.
  2. If you have AppleShare version 3.6 or earlier, open the Microsoft UAM for AppleShare 3.6. If you have version 3.8 or later, open the Microsoft UAM for AppleShare 3.8.
  3. Copy the enclosed AppleShare folder that matches the version the client has installed to the local System folder.
  4. Close all network connections.
