This article was previously published under Q223155 SYMPTOMS
If you attempt to load the Hewlett-Packard (HP) OEM DeskJet 680C driver for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, you receive the following error message:
Error 11: Unable to add printer driver HP DeskJet 680C series v11.0.
CAUSE
Windows 2000 attempts to protect itself from legacy third-party OEM drivers. In this case, you are notified by an error message. This error message is not registered in the event log. Click OK to cancel.
RESOLUTION
Use the driver included with Windows 2000, or contact the manufacturer to inquire about obtaining an updated driver.
STATUS
This behavior is by design.
MORE INFORMATION
This printer (and others that are installed with a Setup.exe program) is listed in the Printupg.inf file to have its Windows NT 4.0 OEM driver mapped to a driver included with Windows 2000 during the upgrade. The Windows NT 4.0 OEM HP DeskJet 680C driver cannot manually be installed in Windows 2000. Windows 2000 blocks the installation of this driver.
When you receive the error message, you also receive an Ignore option. This option does not work and should not be used. In some cases with third-party Setup programs, this option could cause problems.
After the failed Setup attempt, there will be files in the %SystemRoot%\System32\Spool\Drivers\W32x86 folder that begin with "Hpf" that can be deleted. These files were installed by the unsuccessful Setup attempt.
